Admittedly, making your own thread taps requires a lot of skill and machinery. This isn’t for the casual DIY mechanic, but more for an advanced group of folks. At the bare minimum, you’ll need a lathe, an understanding of making threaded rods and a mill to make flutes in the tap. From there, you’ll need all the assorted jaws and collets to hold your workpiece in the machinery, as well as all the cutting tools necessary for machining steel.

Whether you’re among the minority that falls into the group that can do this or the majority that cannot, it’s fascinating to watch someone in a home shop turn a piece of tool steel into an oddball Acme thread tap.
