WINDBER, Pa. – Things are looking a lot brighter inside Windber Public Library.

In a $16,000 project, more than 100 old fixtures and florescent lights were replaced this fall, increasing energy efficiency while also making conditions “a lot easier on the eyes” for library members, Director Joshua Seese said.

In recent years, the building’s aging fixtures had outlived their lifespan, with some overhead lights no longer functioning, he said.

“It created some dark areas in the library,” Seese said, noting that the library relied a lot on its windows for adequate light.

The trouble is, that made the library reliant on sunny weather, he added.

The library’s new LED lighting emits a bright, daylight glow.

The project was made possible through the Whalley Charitable Trust ($10,000), The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies’s Fund for the Future ($5,000) and Hooversville Trinity ELCA Charitable Legacy Fund ($1,000), Seese said.

“It’s a win-win for us at the library and also our patrons,” Seese said.

The library, in a separate project, also refurbished its outdoor benches, adorning them in Rambler royal blue.

Five benches received new wood for their seats and coats of blue paint. Tom Yoytko Construction conducted the work through a $1,300 donation by Memorial Highway Chevrolet, Seese said.

JesCo Inc’s Joe Felix oversaw the project as a consultant, while Drenning Electric replaced the fixtures, Windber Borough Council President John Holden said.

Windber council also credited Seese for making both projects happen.

“Josh is passionate about the library,” Councilman Ron Mash said. “He went out and put the work in to make sure the projects (came to fruition).”

A holiday open house is planned for Dec. 9 to showcase the building, as part of an ongoing fundraiser to support the library’s 2023 fund drive.

Seese said the event will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The fund drive recently hit the $25,000 mark, and officials are hoping to reach their $35,000 goal.

He noted the funds help pay regular bills, maintain the building and fund small projects, as needed.
