Winter is coming, and thanks to this fact, we'll all be spending more time in our homes. It's the perfect time to update your decor, and luckily, it's also when companies, like Yelp, drop their trend reports, providing plenty of design inspiration for your shopping needs. Each year, Yelp searches through millions (yes, millions) of reviews to see what key words and phrases are growing in popularity. This year, they teamed up with interior designer Dani Dazey of The Trixie Motel to discuss some of the top home improvement and design trends for 2024.

Some fan favorites are making a strong return, like maximalist style and dopamine decor, but there's also a focus on statement mirrors, bold lighting, modern shelving, and an organized aesthetic (Real Simple can totally get behind the last one, especially!). Let's take a closer a look at three of Yelp's picks for next year, and while you're not beholden to copy these trends, they might give you inspiration for your next great decorating idea.

Mirrors solve a myriad of problems: They fill a blank wall in an elegant way, they reflect light so they brighten up a room, and, maybe most importantly, they make it feel bigger! Searches for mirror installation went up 34 percent this year on Yelp and it's easy to see why. They're functional pieces of art! "I'm a big fan of making these more utilitarian items beautiful and a fit for the space," Dazey says. She has funky wave edged ones as well as ornate brass mirrors, like the viral Primrose Mirror from Anthropologie. To her, it's all about having fun and bringing something new to a space. "What's so fun about this mirror trend is there are just limitless options in motifs and materials," she says.

Bring on the color! Dopamine decor is all about filling your space with bright and beautiful hues to make your home a happy place, making you happier, too. While this trend has been in vogue for a few years now, Dazey predicts it will evolve and feature more dynamic color schemes and some muted palettes. "I feel like people are starting to become more accustomed to color and learn how to use it in a more sophisticated way," she says. Pink, which went up in search by 92 percent on Yelp, and red will make a huge splash next year, and not in just the bright variations like cherry and fuchsia, but in more toned down shades like rose and scarlet.

It will come as no surprise to anyone who has spent a lot of time scrolling Instagram that maximalism will continue to blossom this year (searches are up 131 percent). One big change? Now, designers are thinking more about maximizing all of those tiny details like hardware and trim. "Playing with trim is huge," Dazey says. "It really adds charm and character to a space that might not have any." It's also a great rental-friendly hack, since you can use adhesive trim to get the look without the custom woodwork. Try a chair rail, details around a doorway, or adding subtle molding to the edge of the ceiling. For a quick hardware makeover, swap out your boring white switch plates for etched brass ones to get that maximalist vibe.
