APEs are hormone disrupters because they mimic estrogen. Furthermore, they are not biodegradable when washed down the drain, and have been known to contaminate rivers and hinder the reproduction of fish. In 1976 the US phased APEs out of all detergents, but it can still be found in many cosmetics products and spermicides.
